Frequently Asked Questions about EatOils™ Products and How the Cleaning Magic Works

All of our EATOILS™ products are safe to use, containing no solvents or other harmful chemicals. Our microbes are all naturally occurring microorganisms that are both effective and safe for humans, animals, and the environment. Our products are all listed on the DSL by Environment Canada and are considered safe for use in Canada.

EATOILS™ are listed with the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) for the safe use in Food Processing facilities.

WHY DON’T CHEMICAL CLEANERS WORK?


Chemical cleaners and disinfectant products are limited in their ability to deal effectively with certain kinds of cleaning jobs. Chemical cleaners can cut grease, but they tend to spread the grease around the affected surface. Chemical disinfectants can kill everything on a surface (both good microbes and bad) however a few minutes after cleaning, the odor causing bacteria multiply on the surface again causing odors.

Our EATOILS™ products handle the toughest jobs that competitive chemical products quite simply cannot do. Biochemical products are designed to address: 1) fats, oils, & grease, 2) odor problems and 3) septic & drain line treatment. Biochemical products use a combination of “chemical action” and “biological action” to deal with these tough jobs.


HOW DO YOU CLEAN FATS, OIL AND GREASE?


The “chemical action” breaks down the bond that the fats, oils & grease and other organics have with the affected surface using surfactants to release these items from the surface involved. The “Biological action” releases microbes into the fats, oils and grease to “digest” the fats, fatty acids, oils and grease.

For dealing with bathroom cleaning and odors – The “chemical action” breaks down the bond that the organics have with the affected surface using surfactants to release these items from the surface involved, encapsulating the organics to prevent the odor causing bacteria from access to the organics. The “Biological action” releases microbes into the organics to “digest” the materials wherever they are, effectively eliminating the odor.

For septic & drain line treatment – The “chemical action” breaks down the bond between the organics and pipe surfaces. The “Biological action” releases microbes into the organics to “digest” the organics and to move through the system, cleaning as they go. These microbes digest all forms of organics including hair, tissue, fats & grease.

HOW DO THE MICROBES IN THE PRODUCT WORK? WHERE DOES THE STAIN GO?


Our microbes are so tiny that you can’t see them without a microscope. When the microbes come in contact with hydrocarbons (oils & grease) they secrete a series of enzymes that digest the hydrocarbons, breaking down the oily messy substance into harmless invisible gasses (hydrogen, oxygen, water vapor) and carbon. The microbes eat the carbon and breathe it out as carbon dioxide - another harmless invisible gas. In a nutshell here's the magic: you start with an ugly, smelly, mess - an oily stain - after using our BT200™ the stain is gone and you replaced it with: 1) invisible, harmless gasses, 2) benign enzymes, & 3) after all the hydrocarbon is gone, the microbes die & are recycled in nature.


WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICROBIALS AND ENZYMES?


Sanitation professionals and PMP often use the terms “microbe” and “enzyme” synonymously. However, they are vastly different. Enzymes are the chemicals that are produced by microbes to “digest” organic matter. Microbes are living “enzyme factories”. Various microbe strains produce enzymes that specialize in digesting different types of organic matter (fats, proteins, carbohydrates, etc.). Once a molecule of enzyme is used to break down organic matter, it is gone.

Products based solely on enzymes, unless used in large quantities, will tend to digest organic matter only partially, because they get “used up” while there is still more organic matter remaining. Due to this effect, enzyme products used to treat grease traps will tend to partially digest the grease and move it into the sanitary sewer system. Because it is only partially digested, the grease solidifies downstream which can create blockages and other problems. For this reason, some municipalities have banned the use of enzymes in grease traps. Similar situations can occur with chemical products that have been sold for grease traps, such as d-limonene. These chemicals tend to partially emulsify the grease and move it into the sanitary sewer system, like enzymes.

Microbial products like EatOils™ work differently. The microbial spores come in contact with the grease and begin producing colonies of bacteria that produce enzymes to digest the grease, or other organic matter. This process of enzyme production and digestion continues as long as the conditions are favorable. Conditions can be made unfavorable by things such as heavy disinfectant use. In practice, continuous dosing of microbes is most effective for grease traps or using dosing systems. As grease is digested, the pH can change and that can affect the microbe’s ability to continue to function. EatOils™ products contain multiple strains of microbes that are designed to function in these conditions. EatOils™ products, if used properly do not cause partial digestion or partial emulsification of grease.

One other issue with enzyme-only products is that they can be unstable in the bottle during storage, so they may be even less effective once they are used, as some of the enzyme content can break down, depending on the formulation and how it is stored. The same thing can happen with microbial products, wherein the microbe count can decrease over time if the product is not formulated to be properly preserved. EatOils™ products are concentrated and are stable in storage, as well as the efficacy. EatOils™ microbes become active when diluted with water for use as instructed. In practice, some loss of microbes during storage is not as damaging as it is for enzyme products, because the microbes are living organisms, and once they get into a favorable environment with their food source (the organic waste and oil), they will begin reproducing, and their numbers will double over time

HOW DO I DEAL WITH REALLY TOUGH OIL STAINS ON A SHOP FLOOR?


Sometimes on really tough stains (say 10-20 years old) the solvents have evaporated away and the oil is hard like taffy. You need to 'soften up' the stains before cleaning them. If you have 4 – 6 hours to wait, just apply the BT200™ full strength and let it sit on the surface overnight. If you are in a hurry, use mineral spirits (available at local hardware stores for $1/gallon or less) and pre-spray the stain. This will soften and liquefy the oil and make it easier for the microbes to digest. The microbes in BT200™ love mineral spirits like candy, so when you apply BT200™ to the surface after mineral spirits, the microbes just eat the spirits right up before they start on the stain. This is a unique way to use an inexpensive solvent in a safe way, to help you clean up the stain without adding to the pollution problem - because the BT200™ ‘eats’ the mineral spirits first, there is no residual to deal with. Mineral spirits will also soften gum, making it easier to remove and then the BT200™ will work on the stain left behind. As always, recover your fluids and put them down a sanitary drain and the BT200™ will continue to clean the hydrocarbons it encounters all the way to the water treatment plant.


HOW DO I GET RID OF THE SHADOW ON OLD OIL STAINS AFTER USING BT200™?


Our product is comprised of a two-part system - 1) a solvent-free, environmentally friendly chemical surfactant for cleaning the surface stain in minutes, & 2) safe, natural microbes that digest the residual stain over time. The microbes in BT200™ will ‘eat’ the residual stain as long as the stain is from an organic hydrocarbon or derivative. This product is not as effective on synthetic oil products. This product effectively cleans oil stains from concrete, asphalt, & soil - and it is safe to use!! It won't harm clothes, skin, animals or people - but it loves oils and grease!! If a shadow remains after cleaning with BT200™ apply some product to the shadow and leave it to soak in. Repeat weekly & the microbes & surfactants will continue to work on the shadow until it is gone.

Concrete is actually a manufactured stone, as it dries and sets the water escapes through evaporation, creating 'straw like' tubes in the stone. Typically, when a spill occurs the fluid fills these tubes. When you look at a stained surface you are actually looking at the ends of these 'straws'. Typical surface cleaning only scrapes the surface and so the stain remains. Our BT200™ goes down into the tubes and the microbes eat the organic material in the spill and empty the tubes over time. On concrete the shadow will disappear in as little as a few days but on asphalt it takes a lot longer.


WHY DON'T I SEE THE SAME RESULTS ON ASPHALT THAT I DO ON CONCRETE?


As asphalt is a mixture of gravel and oil-based binder it is more like oatmeal to work with.  In effect everything that you add to asphalt becomes a part of the mixture.  When you have a spill, hydrocarbons readily join the mixture and discolor the finish.  Long term spills, as in oil drips from parked cars, actually add so much oil that the asphalt breaks down.  When we add the microbes in BT200™, they join the mixture too and search out the free hydrocarbons. 

Depending upon the type of spill, the time for BT200™ to remove the shadow can take anywhere from 30 days to over 2 months.  We suggest that you apply the product by spray at 3:1 to 5:1 weekly and leave it to work on its own without rinsing.  We have successfully used this approach with parking spots in fast food and shopping center locations.  If the asphalt has deteriorated to the point where it is crumbling due to continuing spillage, the beneficial uses of BT200™ are minimized - however, it can recover a badly stained area to a 'stain free' smooth asphalt surface with regular maintenance.


HOW DOES THE PRODUCT WORK ON SOIL AND GRAVEL?


For small spills – 5 gallons or less - BT200™ can be all that you need to clean up the mess. Just spray the diluted product (5 parts water to one-part BT200™) on the soil or gravel to soak it.

The surfactants in the product will begin to separate the oils and grease from the soil and then the microbes will begin their work. Regular, monthly maintenance treatments can begin to remove the effects of years of neglect. For more serious spills you should consult our bio-remediation specialists for the best plan of action.


HOW DOES BT200™ WORK ON WINDOWS AND DELICATE SURFACES?


You typically use BT200™ in a diluted form – 10:1(for general de-greasing) to 64:1(for floors) to 200:1 (for windows) - so it has just enough surfactant to attack the grease and remove it, then the microbes attack the residue. As there are no solvents or harsh chemicals in the product, you can safely use it on your most delicate surfaces.  As long as you use a soft bristle brush that won’t scratch the surface you are cleaning, you should be able to clean virtually anything with BT200™. With a soft brush you can easily remove scuff marks from a wood floor without affecting the finish – a great time and money saver!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY SLOW-MOVING DRAINS CLEAN & ODOR FREE?


Organic matter, grease & food particles that build-up in your drains can develop quickly, slow down your drains and cause odors. Depending on the type and volume of organic matter that you are processing and the cleaning chemicals you use in your facility, the speed of the organic and grease eating process can vary. For best results, we suggest that you start using our EATOILS™ SUPERFLOW™ in your slowest moving drains – starting at the one closest to the municipal outflow. If you follow this plan, you will see immediate results. Other chemicals like dishwashing detergent, most cleaning chemicals, and bleach can have an adverse effect on the flow in your drains - and the microbes in our product. The best approach to using our products is to add them to the drains after the last person uses the toilet at night – this allows the microbes to work uninterrupted through the night time hours, eating the fats, oils, and grease that build up in the system – they keep on working long after you’re done! Most clients see dramatic results after day one of the three-day treatment, however, we strongly suggest that you complete the three-day treatment to ensure that all organic matter is removed. HOW DOES SUPERFLOW™ DEAL WITH ODOR PROBLEMS?


When you use EATOILS™ SUPERFLOW™ in your drain system you are inoculating the area with microbes that attack the sources of odors and begin to destroy them within minutes. Our microbes actually destroy the tiniest food particles so that the other, odor causing bacteria don’t have a chance to get started on the food. Other products tend to mask odors and consequently they have a limited effect on the sources of odor. In addition, our microbes break the bond between the wall of the pipe and the organic matter, creating a clear, free-running drainage system.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS PRODUCT? HOW CAN I TELL THAT IT IS WORKING?


Most chemical and enzyme-only treatments rely on either VOC’s (volatile organic compounds – solvents, etc.) or strong chemicals or enzymes to do the work – while they are initially good at cleaning the drain, chemicals only have a short term effect. Enzymes alone only break down the grease – they don’t digest it, causing problems further down the drain line (sometimes in less than 5 feet).

The technology in our EATOILS™ biochemical products is revolutionary. Unlike chemical treatments and enzyme-only products that are finished as soon as they hit the drain, our EATOILS™ products actually just get started when they are put in the drain. With EATOILS™ SUPERFLOW™ you are actually inoculating the drain line with millions of beneficial microbes every time you pour them down the drain. These microbes will eat all fats, oils, greases, and other food material in the line – breaking down and removing the bond that forms on the walls of your drain lines. This process keeps the lines running efficiently much longer than alternative methods. Most clients who use our SUPERFLOW™ in their drain lines see a major reduction in the number and frequency of calls to plumbers - plus you have less possibility of blockages and foul odors backing up into the system. In many municipalities regulators are promoting the use of “GREEN PRODUCTS” like our SUPERFLOW™ in larger commercial buildings and apartments.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY WASHROOM
AND KITCHEN AREA CLEAN & ODOR FREE?


Grease & food particles that build-up on floors and in the grout between the tiles can take years to develop. Removing the odor will take 2-4 applications. Brightening the grout and returning it to its original color using biochemical cleaning action with EATOILS™ BIOBLAST™ will take 5-8 weeks of daily cleaning using the product at 2 oz. per gallon. All you need to do is mop your floor with our product as you would normally and leave it in a wet state – no rinsing! – you want to allow the microbes to continue to work on the food particles – they keep on working long after you’re done!

For faster results, scrub the floor and grout (using EATOILS™ BIOBLAST™ in the same concentration) on a weekly basis until the discoloring condition is gone. The grout will come back to its original color much faster this way.

A simple test of how well our product works is this – at the end of your cleaning shift with your current product, lift your mop and smell it – it will probably smell of mold and mildew as the bacteria from the floor are on your mop and eating your mop head. Now smell the mop from our product - the mop head will smell clean and when you rinse it, it will come clean, your mop heads will last longer, and your cleaner will go a long way – usually up to twice as far as the competition.

Are you mixing 6 gallons of cleaner and throwing away 3-4 gallons at the end of the job? With our product you can mix up 3 gallons (you have just saved ½ of the cost of our product), clean your floors and pour your left over waste water down your slowest moving drain – the microbes will clean the drain & keep it running freely! How’s that for getting the most out of your product? BIOBLAST™ can also be used as a daily treatment in your grease trap to digest excess greases, fats, & oils that can build up in your system – regular use will reduce the need for pump-outs (by up to 5 times!) and minimize odours and blockages.

HOW DO I DEGREASE EQUIPMENT WITH THIS PRODUCT?


Depending on the thickness of the grease involved you can dilute the product with water until you are happy with the degreasing job. Some clients dilute at 3:1 - some at 5:1 - some at 10:1, it all depends upon the desired result – the higher the dilution the easier it is to spray – but the less concentrated it is for tougher cleaning jobs. Many clients use a spray bottle to apply the product to the area that needs cleaning. Just apply the SUPER DEGREASER™, either by painting it on or by spraying it on the surface so it completely covers the grease. Let it stand for a minute or so. Brush the area with a stiff poly brush that won’t harm your surface, and watch the grease break away! Spray the area with water to rinse. Wipe away the residue with a damp cloth. This approach works well with painted surfaces, walls, doors, wood, etc. As there are no solvents or VOC’s in this product it will not harm most finishes. LAUNDRY HINT: Put your used cloths in the washing machine with other greasy clothing items and add a ¼ cup of SUPER DEGREASER™ and you’ll see years of grease and oil stains disappear! For stubborn stains pre spray the stains and allow the load to presoak for an hour or so before washing.

Just apply the SUPER DEGREASER™, either by painting it on or by spraying it on the surface so it completely covers the grease. Let it stand for at least 10 minutes so the grease can begin to break down (time is critical for this product to yield dramatic results – the longer the product is in direct contact with the grease, the more it will remove). Brush the area with a stiff poly brush that won’t harm your surface, and watch the grease break away! Wipe away the residue with a damp cloth. Recover your fluids and put them down a sanitary drain and the SUPER DEGREASER™ will continue to clean the hydrocarbons it encounters all the way to the water treatment plant.


HOW DO I WASH PARTS WITH THIS PRODUCT?


Always ensure that the oil on the parts is non-toxic and organic-based so the microbes can digest the contaminants (most cutting fluids and preservative oils are organic). In an aqueous parts washing machine you just clean it out completely, rinse it well to ensure no toxins remain, and add SUPER DEGREASER™ and water to the reservoir at 3:1 – 5:1 depending on the results desired. For optimum results, an aquarium aerator can be added to the tank to keep the

microbes working throughout the tank. As parts are cleaned the microbes digest the contaminants and the system can go on for years with only replenishing with product and water as the solution is depleted (some leaves with every part, evaporation, etc.), and occasional sludge (primarily metal filings) removal. For added effectiveness, the microbes in this product love heat – the product increases its activity as the temperature goes up – up to 130º F so you can clean your parts even faster at warmer temperatures. After the initial charging of the tank, the ongoing costs of this approach are usually less expensive than alternative approaches – there is no ongoing charge, no large consumption of cleaner with this process.


WHAT MAKES THIS PRODUCT SAFE FOR MY HANDS AND SKIN?


This product is environmentally safe – there are no solvents, VOC’s, harsh chemicals or any other harmful ingredients in this product.
It contains a natural surfactant that breaks the bond between the surface and the oil or grease-based contaminant. Then there are millions of microbes – the same kind as are in your

digestive system (so they are not harmful to you) that attack the grease and oil and break them down resulting in a clean surface for you – with the bonus that your hands and skin stay soft and clean. Note for those who use this product every day, as with every soap product, you should always wash and rinse your hands after each use so you don’t develop a sensitivity to the product. Regular use of a moisturizer will also help to prevent dry skin.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY GREASY FLOOR UNDER CONTROL?


Grease build-up can take years to develop on floors and in the grout between the tiles. Removing the grease using biochemical cleaning action with EATOILS™ SUPER FLOOR DEGREASER ™ will take 2-3 weeks of daily cleaning using the product at 2 oz. per gallon. All you need to do is mop your floor with our product as you would normally and leave it in a wet state – no rinsing! – you want to allow the microbes to continue to work on the grease – they keep on working long after you’re done! Once you get your greasy condition under control, you will start to see an improvement in the color of the grout (usually after 4-6 weeks).

For faster results, scrub the floor and grout using EATOILS™ SUPER FLOOR DEGREASER™ in the same concentration on a weekly basis until the greasy condition is gone. The grout will also brighten to its original color much faster this way.


WHY DOES THE FLOOR SEEM GREASIER DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF USE? WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?


During the initial treatment period the microbes are ‘pulling’ the grease out of the pores of the floor tiles and grout, so the floor actually is greasier during the first week. To offset this, you can scrub the floor using a scrubbing machine or with a stiff brush as you apply the product. To remove excess grease during this period some clients have squeegee’ d the floor after brushing to remove the excess grease and then followed up with a thorough soaking of the floor with EATOILS™ SUPER FLOOR DEGREASER ™ and then they have left it on the floor overnight.

The next morning, they have noticed that the floor is less greasy. Following this regimen for a few days will shorten the time required to attain grease free floors.

Grease & food particles that build-up on floors and in the grout between the tiles can take years to develop. Removing the odor will take 1-3 applications. Brightening the grout and returning it to its original color using biochemical cleaning action with EATOILS™ SUPERFRESH™ will take 3-6 weeks of daily cleaning using the product at 2 oz. per gallon. All you need to do is mop your floor with our product as you would normally and leave it in a wet state – no rinsing! – you want to allow the microbes to continue to work on the food particles – they keep on working long after you’re done!

For faster results, scrub the floor and grout (using EATOILS™ SUPERFRESH™ in the same concentration) on a weekly basis until the discoloring condition is gone. The grout will come back to its original color much faster this way.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY CARPET CLEAN & ODOR FREE?


Food particles that build-up in carpets, backing, in the underpad and on the floor beneath can be removed in 1-2 applications using the product at 2 oz. per gallon in a carpet extractor type machine. Just pre-treat the ‘most dirty’ areas with our product and follow up with your carpet extractor – then allow the carpet to air dry - the microbes will continue to work on and eliminate the ‘food’ particles – they keep on working long after you’re done!

For spot treatment applications, e.g. (4” surface stain) soak the area with the concentrate (1-2 oz.), then pour a quart of water onto the stain (to soak the carpet, backing, underpad & floor) – always wet an area at least 5 times the size of the surface stain (most stains spread out in all directions and they will ‘wick’ up to the carpet surface as they dry - so you want to go past the edge of the underlying stain to capture all of the residue and prevent the mark from re-appearing as it dries). Then, agitate the carpet to ensure that the product is in contact with all food material. After waiting 10 - 20 minutes, lay a towel or paper towels on the surface and press down on the stain area to draw the fluid & contaminants out of the carpet. Allow the area to air dry. Repeat as necessary to remove all residual discoloration.

For bonnet cleaning applications, pre-mix the product (2 oz. per gallon) and spot treat the carpet on a regular basis.

HOW DOES THE POND/LAKE GO OUT OF BALANCE?


In a normal ecosystem under normal conditions there are many life forms in the pond/lake that co-exist in balance – weeds, fish, microorganisms, bacteria, amphibians, insects, algae, etc. When the nutrients in the pond are impacted by unnatural events like the increased inflow of nutrients from fertilizers used on neighboring lawns, etc., the pond can go out of balance due to the impact of these excess nutrients. The ecosystem will try to compensate for the imbalance with some organisms increasing in number. Typically, the simplest life forms will have an advantage when these nutrients are in abundant supply - algae is one of those simple life forms.

When the ecosystem is out of balance the algae can overtake other life forms and disrupt the pond ecosystem, causing odors, and reducing other activity in the pond.


WHAT DOES SUPER POND CLARIFIER DO?


SUPER POND CLARIFIER is a blend of beneficial bacteria that will out-compete the algae for the nutrients in the pond/lake and bring the pond/lake back into balance. In nature, when animals and plants compete for the same resource, the animals always win. So when the bacteria in SPC are introduced to the pond/lake, they will digest the excess organic material and nutrients in the pond/lake resulting in a reduction of algae and a clarification of the water. When the microbes or bacteria come in contact with excess organic material and nutrients they digest the these food sources breaking them down into harmless invisible gasses (hydrogen, oxygen, water vapor & carbon dioxide). HOW FAST DOES IT WORK?

WHERE DOES THE ALGAE GO?
